Catholic Education is one of the largest non-government employers in the Far North. Employment in Catholic schools in the Cairns Diocese offers a variety of teaching jobs, non-teaching jobs and leadership positions. Professional, administrative and leadership positions also exist with the Diocese’s education office, Catholic Education Services (CES).
There are 29 Catholic schools and colleges in the Cairns Diocese, which serve almost 11,500 students. There are currently 20 primary schools, 7 secondary colleges (four with boarding) and two P-12 colleges. The newest P-12 college at Mount Peter and a P-6 school in Weipa opened on 27 January, 2016. A Youth Assistance College, Holy Spirit College, opened in Cooktown and Manoora in 2015. A new Catholic secondary college is planned for 2022, co-located at James Cook University, Smithfield.
The Diocese’s Catholic Early Learning and Care (CELC) ministry also operates a Long Daycare centre, Kindergartens and Outside School Hours Care services.
Catholic schools offer students a quality education in an inclusive, caring and life-giving environment. Teaching and learning in our schools involves more than providing academic instruction. It is about nurturing the individual student – academically, spiritually, emotionally and physically – equipping them with the skills to be compassionate and contributing adults.
Catholic Education is thriving in Far North Queensland, with enrolments continuing to increase each year and a strong sense of community within each school and parish. We invite you to join us. Teaching in a Catholic school in the Cairns Diocese is more than just a teaching job, but a vocation.
