About the Awards
The Spirit of Catholic Education (SOCE) Awards and the Docemus Awards are run concurrently and both presented during Catholic Education Week.
The SOCE Awards are state-wide and conducted by the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC).
The Docemus Awards are Cairns Diocese-based and conducted by Cairns Catholic Education (CCE).
Nominations now open
Nominations are now open for the 2017 spirit of Catholic Education Awards and close at 5pm on Friday, 12 May 2017.
The SOCE nomination form is used for both the SOCE Awards and the Docemus Awards in the Cairns Diocese, and therefore includes a cover sheet for the Cairns Diocese which must be completed to indicate for which category in one or both awards the nomination is being submitted. Hence it is imperative that nominations from the Cairns Diocese use the nomination form below from this webpage or the Cairns Catholic Education staff portal, and not the Catholic Education Week webpage.
Catholic school communities and other Catholic education agencies in Queensland are encouraged to nominate individuals in the community (staff member, parent, clergy or volunteer) who are making an outstanding contribution to the life of the community in one or more of the following areas:
- initiating a program and/or activity in response to a need
- leading and facilitating for change and improvement
- demonstrating excellence in their work
- engaging in exceptionally life-giving relationships with students, colleagues or other members of the school community or Catholic education agency
- advancing Reconciliation (for consideration for the Aunty Joan Hendriks Reconciliation Award). Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of Catholic education communities are eligible for nomination for this award.
The Nomination Form can be downloaded as editable version below, to then be completed electronically, saved to a computer and submitted by email. Alternatively, it can be printed and manually completed, scanned and returned by email, post or courier.
All award nominees will receive a certificate of recognition and the recipients will be presented with their awards as part of the official State Launch of Catholic Education Week which will be held for the first-time outside Brisbane, in the Diocese of Cairns, at St Andrew’s Catholic College, Redlynch on Wednesday 26 July 2017 at 10.30am.
Nominations should be forwarded to the designated diocesan/QCEC representatives as specified in the nomination form by Friday 12 May, 2017. In the Cairns Diocese, nominations can be emailed to the Communications Officer at the following email address: email@example.com
The Awards were founded in 2002 in recognition of the outstanding contribution to Catholic Education by Tom Doolan, a former Deputy Director of Catholic Education in the Cairns Diocese. Meaning ‘to teach’, the awards acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional commitment, achievement and contribution to Catholic Education by staff, volunteers and supporters of Catholic Education.
Awards are presented for the following categories:
- Early Career Teacher
- Primary Teacher
- Secondary Teacher
- School Officer
- Volunteer Supporter
- Lifelong Contribution
The Lifelong Contribution recipient receives a framed certificate, as do other award recipients who also receive a $2,000 professional development grant through the financial support of Catholic Church Insurances, The Catholic Principals of the Diocese of Cairns, the Diocesan Parents & Friends Association, Catholic Education Services and the Sisters of Mercy in the Diocese of Cairns.
The Early Career Teacher Award was added in 2016, recognising those teachers who demonstrate outstanding performance and instructional skills during the first three years of their teaching. To view the Award criteria, click here
