FNQ School’s $1.5M Facelift Ensures Inclusion

09/11/2021 By snutt

A Catholic school in Tully has officially opened a new junior precinct that helps cater to the needs of diverse learners and students with a disability.

The $1.59 million facelift at St Clare’s School includes an elevator, large disabled toilet and shower facility, and a new diversity wing complete with a multi-use learning area and offices.

Principal Karran Burzacott said the new precinct enabled teachers and support staff to deliver programs to students in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

“It is vital that all students and their families feel comfortable and happy when they enter our school,” she said.

“We are dedicated to caring for, encouraging and assisting each of our students individually, and our new junior precinct further enables us to provide this important one-on-one approach to learning.”

Mrs Burzacott said the new elevator had already been very helpful for students, staff and parents not able to use the stairs.

Students at St Clare’s School in Tully, along with their teacher Gita Sima, enjoyed their first day of school for 2021 in the new junior precinct.

The precinct, which was largely funded by a $1.42 million Commonwealth Government grant, also includes purpose-built Prep and Year 1 classrooms with outdoor learning spaces and a covered walkway through to the library.

An old building was demolished at the site to make way for the area. Construction started in July 2020 and was completed in January 2021, in time for the new school year.

The official opening and blessing on Tuesday November 9 was attended by Vicar General Fr Frank Gordon, Diocese of Cairns Acting Chief of Operations Bill Dixon and Cairns Catholic Education Services Acting Executive Director Ian Davis, as well as Parish Priest Fr Joby Jose, former Parish Priest Fr Hilary Flynn and members of the St Clare’s School community.

Students at St Clare’s School in Tully are learning and thriving in the new junior precinct.

Mr Davis said Catholic schools around the Far North regularly assessed and upgraded their facilities to enhance the experience of students and the wider school community.

“We always aim to ensure our schools are equipped with the best possible resources and technology to help all of our students learn and thrive in the 21st century,” he said.

“It is particularly important that our youngest learners begin their education journey in an inclusive and collaborative space.”
