There’s a new charity bin on the block thanks to the ingenuity and open heartedness of students at St Joseph’s School, Parramatta Park.
Parent Emma Kilfoy (centre) says the new bin is so convenient, while students Jamie Kilfoy, Indyannah Jackonia and Lewana Woolcott are excited to be able to help support Vinnies.
Students at St Joseph’s recently designed their own Vinnies donation bin, which was unveiled at the school earlier this month. Donations from the bin will go to local Vinnies volunteer members to help the charity’s efforts to alleviate poverty in the region.
Vinnies FNQ Membership and Development Officer Davina Hickling said the bin is incredibly joyous with artwork designed by students.
“All Signs Print & Design were quick to come on board with the project and provided us with a bin design that the school was proud to install and call their own. It is incredibly bright and joyous – celebrating through artwork what the students believe church is,” she said.
The new donation initiative is an extension of an already strong relationship between the school and the charity.
“The students have been working with our Vinnies Youth team this year exploring social justice issues that exist around the country and the world, but more importantly locally,” she said.
“The students also looked at fashion recycling and the positive environmental impact it can have on a global scale – they wanted to have a practical and effective way to make a tangible difference to people in need in their community that was also eco-conscious.”
The school community can now donate secondhand clothes, with the students also helping to collect and sort the clothes for Vinnies volunteer members to distribute to local families in need.
“The new donation bin at the school will increase our ability to respond to demand from low income families for quality clothing, thereby saving them money that they can use to pay bills or put food on the table.”
The school is a passionate supporter of the Vinnies Christmas Appeal, which brightens the Christmas of countless families and individuals in the region who would otherwise go without.
Vinnies has assisted more than 10,692 people in Far North Queensland, 4710 of them were children under the age of 16.
