Principal Profile: Ruth Mallon, Mother of Good Counsel School, North Cairns

21/11/2022 By Stephanie Meekings

In this month’s Principal Profile, Mother of Good Counsel School Principal, Ruth Mallon, shares what is most special about the North Cairns school as well as what makes her most proud to be the leader of the thriving inner-city school community.

What is most special about your school community?

‘Let everything you do, be done in love’ is an emphasis in our community. Our staff are loving and firm, as they guide each child in our community. We try to create that ‘family’ feel, where children and adults feel valued. There are opportunities for lots of laughter and chatter, and also for following expectations and striving to achieve personal goals.

What do you hope to achieve in your role as Principal?

I want to see happy children who have a sense of belonging; children who have the strength to continue to grow and challenge themselves every day of their lives.

What makes you most proud to be the leader of your school community?

We have such hard working staff who truly believe in the children they work with. The significant roles they play in the lives of the children here, are honoured and reflect the integrity and passion they have for learning and helping each individual to be the best version of themselves that they can be.

How did your education shape you to be the person you are today?

I didn’t attend a Catholic primary or high school, as a student. I attended our local primary school, and the closest high school. At primary school, I was pretty quick at numbers and problem solving, but wasn’t as interested in reading or writing. I loved playing with my friends at lunch time; you’d never find me in the Library.

I wanted to be a teacher from about Year 3. I had a teacher for a couple of years, in our small school, who was strict and had high expectations, but we saw him laugh a lot, too. He seemed to have the right mix of firm, fair and fun, and I thought I’d like to be able to do that, too. I actually had the chance to share that with him last year, when I met up with him again. He was surprised to have been such a strong influence, and such an inspiration.

What motto, affirmation or prayer do you live by?

My favourite word is ‘integrity’. Being honest with yourself and your own moral compass can be the toughest challenge of every day!

What is the highlight of your career so far?

Being the principal at Mother of Good Counsel, and working with the amazing leadership team we have built, is the highlight of my work. We influence so many adults and children every day, through our work. We are blessed!

What’s the best thing about living and working in FNQ?

I’m a Cairns local. I love the weather and the opportunities that this beautiful part of the world has for us every day. You don’t have to travel far to feel like you’ve gone into another world of wonder. I love how the mountains change, depending on the light, and that the beach isn’t ever far away.
