English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)

Support for EAL/D Learners in Cairns Catholic Education

There are significant benefits in knowing more than one language and in Cairns Catholic Education schools and colleges, multilingual learners are valued and supported. Some learners are adding English to another language or dialect they use at home and may need extra help to develop their English skills at school. These learners are known as EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) learners.

EAL/D learners receive support in the classroom through language-aware teaching. They may also get additional help from a student officer or qualified teacher. Classroom strategies are adjusted for EAL/D learners, and personalised learning plans are created for those who are new to English.

It’s important for multilingual learners to continue developing and maintaining their home language. Being able to speak more than one language has social, cultural, and intellectual benefits, which also supports their progress and understanding at school.
