Literacy & Numeracy

Literacy and numeracy are fundamental to student success. Our data-informed, evidence-based practices and resources are produced in partnership with Australian Universities to ensure teachers are equipped to support students to develop these essential skills for learning and engaging in society.

Teaching Reading

As the ability to read is fundamental to all literacy development, the Teaching Reading P-10 Guideline outlines the Cairns Catholic Education Community’s evidence-based position on the learning and teaching of reading. This guideline will be implemented by all schools and colleges in the Diocese of Cairns to inform the teaching of reading Prep to Year 10.

The ‘Big Six’ components are incorporated through all stages of reading. Rather than a continuum, these six components are integrated, and students will move in and out of each one as they learn to decode and make meaning of text. It is essential that reading is taught across all learning areas through a whole school approach.

Teaching Writing

As the ability to write is fundamental to all literacy development, the Teaching Writing P-10 Procedure outlines the Cairns Catholic Education Community’s evidence-based position on the learning and teaching of writing. This guideline will be implemented by all schools and colleges in the Diocese of Cairns to inform the teaching of writing Prep to Year 10.

Teaching Numeracy

Numeracy is fundamental to a student’s ability to learn at school and to engage productively in society. In the Australian Curriculum, students become numerate as they develop the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently across learning areas at school and in their lives more broadly. The Australian Curriculum states: Numeracy encompasses the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need to use mathematics in a wide range of situations. It involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.
