Honouring Excellence in Catholic Education

Exemplary individuals and educators were honoured this Catholic Education Week at the state-wide Spirit of Catholic Education Awards and the locally hosted Docemus Awards.

Ian Davis, Deputy Executive Director, Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns, was the sole recipient from Cairns to be honoured with a prestigious Spirit of Catholic Education (SOCE) Award.

“Ian has made a lasting impact on the system through his support for leaders, development of professional learning programs, and initiatives that foster belonging,” said Durm O’Riordan, Executive Director, Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns.

“I have been fortunate to have known, and worked alongside, Ian over the past two decades in a variety of roles. As a principal and senior system leader, he has placed student learning and wellbeing at the core of his work.”

The Queensland Catholic Education Commission SOCE awards are presented annually to recognise individuals or teams making an outstanding contribution to Catholic education in Queensland.

The Docemus Awards, meaning “to teach”, were presented at a ceremony on the Friday night of Catholic Education Week as a meaningful culmination to the week’s celebrations.

“The volunteers and staff across our 30 Catholic schools and our offices demonstrate unwavering dedication to ensure that all students entrusted in our care are given every opportunity to succeed,” said Durm.

“The SOCE and Docemus Awards are a way of recognising and celebrating these individuals and teams, and the impact they make on our students every day.”

She was known for her unwavering dedication, quiet strength, and a heart full of love. She served as a mentor, carer, guide, and a constant comforting presence. She wore many hats with grace and humility, including classroom support officer, tuckshop convenor, pastoral carer, and cultural guide.  Margaret’s no-nonsense approach was combined with a kind and compassionate heart.
