What is most special about your school community?
MacKillop is a truly inclusive and welcoming place to be. Like the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, we aim to fill everyone’s heart with love. Every person is a valued member of our MacKillop Family.
What do you hope to achieve in your role as Principal?
My vision for MacKillop Catholic College is inspired by the Josephite Sisters – to provide every student with an engaging, quality education that supports them to achieve their personal best, and to be a confident, compassionate adults when they leave us.
What makes you most proud to be the leader of your school community?
As College Principal, I love coming to work every day. Just walking in the gate, I am greeted by happy children who are ready for a great day of learning. The collective energy and passion for teaching, learning and being together is palpable. Saint Mary MacKillop would be so proud.
How did your education shape you to be the person you are today?
I have always loved to learn, especially about Science. I learnt from a young age to research for myself (back in the day of card catalogues and vertical files!). I decided in Year 6 that I wanted to be a teacher and that never changed. My Year 8 & 9 Maths teacher, (Mrs G), always challenged me to push myself and have the confidence to try ‘hard stuff’ – hence I became a high school Maths and Science teacher. And I still love teaching.
What motto, affirmation or prayer do you live by?
In any challenging situation, I ask myself “What would Jesus do now?”
What is the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career so far would have to be working and leading the development of two Prep-Year 12 Colleges. My own children attended a P-12 College and so I have first-hand experience of the many advantages that they offer. This is especially true at MacKillop – the pastoral care and support of learning for our young people is exemplary.
What’s the best thing about living and working in FNQ?
We live in an environmentally beautiful, green, clean and less populated paradise. And MacKillop is situated at the base of Mount Peter – a stunning place to connect with nature each day!
How would you describe ‘the Catholic school difference’?
It is my firm belief that Catholic schools develop young people of hope, courage and wisdom; people who are the face of God to others. Through genuine gratitude and community service, our children will make our world a better place for every living creature.
