Principal Profile: Lauretta Graham, Newman Catholic College, Smithfield

This month we speak to Dr Lauretta Graham on what she hopes to achieve as Principal of Newman Catholic College, Smithfield.

Being invited to be the foundation principal of three schools across northern Australia has been an honour and privilege for Dr Lauretta Graham.

What do you hope to achieve in your role as Principal?

It is a blessing to be part of and influence on the lives of so many people. My hope is that each person who has the opportunity to experience Newman Catholic College whether as a student, family member or as staff, we come to grow in both faith and reasoning as St John Henry Newman articulated. I hope that we can pass on the message that as a Catholic Church Community we are part of the one reality, and we are connected to something bigger than ourselves. Learning and Faith go hand in hand and we can be the best we can be when these two elements work together.

What makes you most proud to be the leader of your school community?

Our beautiful students are the focus of all that we do at Newman.  I am proud of them and very thankful for the brilliant staff we have at this College.

How does Newman Catholic College offer a world-class education?

Newman teaches students to think. They learn to stand for something as they grow in their enthusiasm to learn.

Newman Catholic College is the first Catholic school in Australia co-located with a university.

How did your education shape you to be the person you are today?

My extended family always treasured education. Both sets of grandparents and my parents gave up much to offer my siblings and me a great education. For this we are grateful. I encourage our students to see education as giving freedom and choice.

What motto, affirmation or prayer do you live by?

Always try to leave the people you meet better than you found them.

Remember that you always have God to lean on… He constantly invites us to lean on Him… whenever you are in need to support and strength.

What is the highlight of your career so far?

Being invited to be the foundation principal of three schools across northern Australia has been such an honour and a privilege. Being awarded an Honorary Doctorate through James Cook University was extremely pleasing and a highlight for me.  The close association with James Cook University through Newman Catholic College is incredible for families, students and staff.

What’s the best thing about living and working in FNQ?

I love the people of Northern Australia. They possess a warm and welcoming heart. Where else can you experience reef, rainforest and outback so closely located.
