This month, we spoke to newly-appointed Principal at Mother of Good Counsel School, North Cairns, Katherine Boot.
What is most special about your school community?
There is a ‘feel’ about Mother of Good Counsel when you walk through the gates. It stems from our strong sense of community and welcome offered by students, staff, families and visitors. We operate under the sentiment ‘Let everything you do be done in love’ where everyone is treated with care, dignity and respect.
What do you hope to achieve in your role as Principal?
To provide a safe, positive and engaging environment where students and staff are treated with respect and dignity, and student learning and wellbeing is prioritised. That our families are active contributors and feel welcome and included.
What makes you most proud to be the leader of your school community?
The cohesiveness and family feel of Mother of Good Counsel. People are supportive and look out for each other. Our staff are hardworking and strive to provide engaging opportunities for their students, while nurturing and encouraging each child to be the best version of themselves.
How did your education shape you to be the person you are today?
I enjoyed school. I wanted to be a teacher from an early age and would volunteer at my local primary school whenever I had the opportunity. I enjoyed witnessing children learn something new and making a difference in their lives. The teachers I remember were caring, relatable, consistent and firm, which helped guide me to be the educator I am today.
What motto, affirmation or prayer do you live by?
Our school motto is Honour and Truth and is what I strive to adhere to on a daily basis. To be authentic, act with integrity and to be true to myself and others.
What is the highlight of your career so far?
Being part of Mother of Good Counsel, where my leadership journey began. This is a community that prioritises family and wellbeing as the cornerstone for learning and relationships, and lays the foundation for successful learning. I feel very blessed to be leading this village.
What’s the best thing about living and working in FNQ?
I grew up in Cairns and I love the weather (especially May-October!), and the variety of landscapes and experiences it provides. Whether you like the beach, freshwater holes, hiking on the trails… there’s something beautiful to experience and you don’t have to drive far to feel like you’re on holidays!
How would you describe ‘the Catholic school difference’?
I have never experienced education outside the Catholic school setting. I love working and interacting with like-minded people who foster the same values, have a shared vision and common belief system.
