Celebrating Outstanding Teacher Mentors
Last night, CEDC representatives Mel Turner and Jo Martin were privileged to attend the 2026 James Cook University (JCU) Site-Based Teacher Educators Awards, where exceptional educators were recognised for their outstanding mentoring and support of pre-service teachers during their school placements.
Congratulations to the following teachers who were acknowledged for their dedication and commitment to nurturing the next generation of educators:
- Bec Paterson – St Gerard Majella School, Woree
- Matt Nolan – Good Counsel College, Innisfail
- Erica Robb – Our Lady Help of Christians School, Earlville
- Jenna Murray – St Mary’s Catholic College, Woree
- Michael James – St Mary’s Catholic College, Woree
- Lucille Ruggeri – Holy Cross School, Trinity Park
- Pat Gill – MacKillop Catholic College, Mount Peter
What makes these awards particularly meaningful is that recipients are nominated by the pre-service prac students they have mentored. Each nomination includes a personal reflection on the placement experience and the profound influence of their supervising teacher.
While all nominees were recognised for their significant contributions to developing pre-service teachers’ professional skills and classroom practice, a common theme emerged throughout the reflections: these supervising teachers consistently went above and beyond expectations. Their encouragement, guidance and genuine care not only strengthened teaching capabilities but also left a significant personal impact, which the pre-service teachers will take with them into their careers.
The reflections highlighted the important role these mentors play in building confidence, fostering professional growth and inspiring future educators as they begin their teaching careers.
