CEDC Launches First Nations Education Strategy
Last week we marked a significant milestone in the life of Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns with the official launch of our First Nations Education Strategy 2026–2030. The launch marks the beginning of a renewed commitment to walk together with humility, justice and hope, and to ensure that every First Nations child and young person in our care is seen, heard, valued, understood, nurtured and supported to flourish academically, socially, culturally and spiritually.
The Strategy recognises the extraordinary cultural richness of Far North Queensland and the distinct histories, languages, knowledge systems and cultural authority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our diocese. It calls us to honour local cultural authority, strengthen relationships with families, Elders and communities, embed First Nations voice in planning and decision-making, and build culturally-safe and inclusive learning environments where identity, culture, wellbeing, faith and excellence are deeply connected.
Over the next five years, our work will be guided by five key priorities: Student Identity and Wellbeing; Community Engagement; Curriculum and Pedagogy; Leadership and Governance; and Cultural Safety, Capability and Workforce Development. Together, these priorities provide a clear framework for action across our schools and system. They remind us that First Nations education is central to who we are as Catholic educators and to the flourishing of every young person entrusted to us.
It was deeply fitting that the Strategy was launched on the grass of Bishop’s House, a place of visible connection between our diocesan story, our mission in Catholic education, and the Country on which we gathered. Standing together in that sacred place, we were reminded that reconciliation is grounded in relationship: with God, with one another, with Country, and with those whose wisdom has carried culture, story and responsibility across generations. One of the most powerful moments of the launch was the presence of Torres Strait Island pigeons above us. Their presence was received by many as spiritually significant, being a beautiful reminder of ancestors overlooking the gathering, bearing witness to this moment, and calling us to honour the legacy we inherit and the legacy we now help shape for future generations.
“I offer my heartfelt thanks to the Elders, Traditional Custodians, students, families, Indigenous Liaison Officers, First Nations educators, school and CES staff, and community partners whose voices, wisdom and advocacy have shaped this Strategy,” said Executive Director Durm O’Riordan.

As one Body in Christ, may we continue to walk this journey together. May our schools be places where culture is honoured, voices are heard, relationships are strengthened and every First Nations student is empowered to nurture and grow their genius.
