Principal Profile: David Graham, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

In this month’s Principal Profile, we speak to newly-appointed Principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Waiben and Kirriri: David Graham.

David describes himself as an experienced educator who has developed a deep understanding of how to foster student success, both academically and spiritually. He is committed to working closely with all stakeholders to create a supportive and inclusive environment by fostering a culture of open communication and mutual respect. He believes that as a Catholic educator, infusing the curriculum with Catholic values and teachings is essential, and he is committed to working collaboratively towards the common goal of exceptional Catholic education.

David Graham says that to lead the Sacred Heart community as its Principal is easily the most outstanding career achievement to date.

What is most special about your school community?

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School offers a unique geography, culture, and faith combination. Located across just two of the many islands of the Torres Strait, our community provides a dynamic learning environment that is both exciting and engaging. Here, Christian teachings and traditional beliefs are interwoven to create a diverse setting for education. The natural beauty of our surroundings enriches this experience and offers exceptional learning opportunities. Through strong partnerships with local families and leaders, we ensure that our education remains culturally relevant and promotes holistic development. This harmonious fusion of faith, culture, and nature fosters a nurturing environment where students can embrace their identities, build resilience, and evolve into compassionate, culturally aware individuals.

What do you hope to achieve in your role as Principal?

My tenure as Principal will be marked by calm, organised consolidation. Given the considerable turnover of our school due to its remote location, my role is to secure and preserve our strong Catholic identity while ensuring educational excellence and opportunities for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic or cultural background. Additionally, I hope to oversee the provision and revitalisation of learning and play infrastructure worthy of our vibrant community.

What makes you most proud to be the leader of your school community?

I am incredibly proud to lead our school community, where we celebrate a rich blend of cultural diversity and faith. Our school is a vibrant place where we honour Torres Strait Islander traditions while pursuing the values of Catholic education. I take great pride in our dedicated staff, who have created an inclusive and verifying environment, and our students, whose resilience, creativity, and kindness inspire me daily. It is a true honour to lead a community that values each individual, fosters a sense of belonging, and works together towards a brighter future.

How did your education shape you to be the person you are today?

My journey to this leadership position has been one of many twists and turns. Growing up and being educated in the Far North Queensland State school system, my love of music gave me tremendous opportunities and fostered a deep understanding and acceptance of others. Leaving home to pursue a music degree at Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music ingrained in me perseverance and an intuition for creative thinking—traits that have been invaluable in my education career. Additionally, my passion for sports and organisation opened the door to opportunities in North America, where I worked in developing aspiring athletes via the administration and delivery of rugby codes. My faith, deeply intertwined with family life, has always guided my purposeful and reflective decision-making. I choose to work in Catholic education because I believe in our call to be witnesses of the risen Christ. I am dedicated to sharing my experiences with our young people and am committed to restoring and revitalising the modern church for a brighter tomorrow.

What motto, affirmation or prayer do you live by?

Perhaps it is my migrant heritage, yet I firmly believe in three fairly ordinary drivers of all success: hard work, perseverance and honesty. I also particularly enjoy revisiting this scripture firmly centred on the nature of faith: “Those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint”. Isiah 40:31

What is the highlight of your career so far?

To lead the Sacred Heart community as its Principal is easily my most outstanding career achievement to date.

Christian teachings and traditional beliefs are interwoven to create a diverse setting for education at Sacred Heart.

What’s the best thing about living and working in FNQ?

I was born and raised in Far North Queensland. After travelling the world, I still believe it is one of the most spectacular places on Earth. Our region boasts stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a rich cultural heritage. It is home to some of the most magnificent natural wonders on the planet. Additionally, it has a unique human story with indigenous and non-indigenous Australians living, surviving, and now thriving in our very own ‘Garden of Eden’.

How would you describe ‘the Catholic school difference’?

Catholic schools are distinguished by our dedication to nurturing the whole person. This includes developing the mind and the heart. Following the teachings of Jesus Christ, our schools strive to be spaces where faith, hope, and love come together to guide students towards lives of wisdom, compassion, and justice. St. John Paul II said, “Catholic education is primarily about sharing Christ and helping others embody Christ’s values.” This mission goes beyond academic accomplishments, shaping individuals who reflect Christ’s teachings and exemplify His love and justice.
